Cheeese Festival #2: Nantwich

Question: What is the nature of a cheeese festival in England, and how does this compare with those in France? Discuss.

  • English cheeese festivals are hidden within local agricultural shows. The French are entirely unabashed and permit the festival to entirely take over a village for the day.
  • The range of cheeese seen in Nantwich, a judged competition, is far broader than that at Rocamadour, which appears more a celebration of a specific local style.
  • You won't find aligot at Nantwich.
  • The cheeese-making goats aren't blessed at the local church in England. Neither are they droved through the middle of the festival grounds.
  • English tasting portions are substantially larger than French.
  • Then again, there are actually some bad cheeeses in England.
  • Great though Stilton is, it's possible that Cashel produces the finest blue cheeeses in the Isles (they're in Ireland).
Looking fabulous at the festival
A "bento box" of cheeese!
Happy hiding in the cheeese
